SPAIN WILL FEEL THE HEAT EVEN MORE NOW TO WIN GOLD ON THEIR HOME COURT AS 2014 NBA MVP KEVIN DURANT WILL NOT COMPETE AT THE FIBA WORLD CUP PDF Print E-mail

-      AUG. 8th - KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU WILL PLAY WITH HOUSTON NEXT YEAR

-      ROCKETS RAISE LOW-BALL OFFER WITH 4.8 MILLION NEXT YEAR TO THE GREEK

-            AUG. 8th - GREECE 66 SERBIA 64 -  GIANNIS A. BUCKS SF - 3 PT FLOATER

-         TEAM USA & COACH K SCOUTING IN 2006 LOSS - IT WAS ALL GREEK NUMBERS

-    AUG. 8th - NAISMITH AGAIN FORGETS NICK GALIS & HIS 33 PPG CAREER - WAKE UP

-      GOLD OR BUST - DAVID BLATT & RUSSIA 2007 UPSET OF SPAIN ON HOME COURT

-      LOADED SQUAD FROM SPAIN WILL BE FAVORITE FOR GOLD WITH NO KEVIN DURANT

The home squad of the 2014 World Cup of basketball is Spain and the veteran team with many NBA players on the roster, that have played together for years in hot summer events, were going to feel the pressure to win the Gold medal on their home court, even before the breaking news of today that 2014 NBA MVP Kevin Durant decided he needed a break from basketball, as he will not play in Spain in September for team USA, but without Kevin Durant on a USA roster that already do not have LeBron James, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony, from the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winning teams, that beat Spain in VERY CLOSE down the wire games, THE PRESSURE WILL BE ON SPAIN to win Gold versus a new team USA that will have less than a month of practice time versus the years that Spain has played together.

Spain has a tougher time than team USA in reaching the Gold Medal game, with France, Serbia, Brazil, Croatia, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Greece (The last nation to defeat team USA led NBA stars) on their side of the World Cup bracket, compared to USA that has only Turkey, Lithuania and Slovenia on their side, that could pull off an upset of the NBA USA stars, no disrespect to Gustavo Ayon and Mexico, but unless he plays like SHAQ on the inside, those other three squads are the only teams that USA must scout well to advance to the SEMIS.  USA scouting took a hit at the 2006 FIBA WC when coach K did not know who NUMBER FOUR & NUMBER SEVEN were on the Greek roster when he spoke about Theo Papaloukas and Vassilis Spanoulis in the post-game press conference loss to a TEAM WITH NO NBA PLAYERS.  Since the Greek loss, team USA has done a better job of scouting, but without the main guys from the 2008 and 2012 Gold medal squads and now no Kevin Durant, who carried team USA in the 2010 Gold medal WC in Turkey, EUROJOHNBBALL thinks Spain is now an seven to eight point favorite over team USA in the Gold medal game, if Spain can get out of the GROUP of DEATH on their side of the World Cup bracket.

Spain will have a HUGE advantage in the the frontline with NBA players Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka sitting in the paint and it will make things tough for team USA to get inside layups at the rim, so unless James Harden, Kyle Korver, Klay Thompson or Stephen Curry go crazy from 3 point land, Spain will grab another WC title, just as they did in 2006 over Greece in the Gold medal game.  Spain have many guards on the team that can run a team from the PG spot, but most NBA fans know Ricky Rubio of the Twolves, the other lead guards that can stick the DEEP 3 POINT shot better and will be in at the end of close knock-out games more than Ricky Rubio are New York Knicks PG Jose Calderon, 2014 Euroleague regular season MVP Sergio Rodriguez, Euroleague All-time leading scorer Juan Carlos Navarro and GLUE GUY combo-guard and the best perimeter defender on the Spanish squad Sergio Llull and all four of those guards along with SG-SF Rudy Fernandez will get many open looks with the Gasol brothers ability to post-up in the paint.   If coach K wins this Gold medal with no Durant on the home soil of the veteran Spanish squad, then it will be his best coaching job he has ever done.

Spain will feel the pressure on their home court, just like they did in the 2007 Eurobasket Gold medal game versus Russia, when Andrei Kirilenko, new Cavs coach David Blatt and a game winning jumper by American PG ???  J.R Holden shocked the basketball world with a HUGE upset on the Spanish home court .    Team USA has better individual talent on the 2014 roster than Russia had, but can they get it together in less than one month to put that 2007 Eurobasket PRESSURE back in the minds of the Spanish squad, that now MUST WIN GOLD IN SPAIN or it will be a lost summer for the proud Spanish players that love to compete for their home nation in any FIBA competion, Olympics, Euroibasket or FIBA World championship.     Fans in the USA will probably not watch much of this World Cup unless USA is in the Gold medal game, as NFL football and college football starts and football is KING in the USA, no matter who plays on the USA roster, USA fans will not get hyped for an event that is on the same time schedule as football.

-          LAST LOSS COACH K & NBA TEAM USA - 2006 SEMIS VS GREECE FULL VIDEO

-     COACH K STARTS USA PRACTICE WITH MORE FOCUS ON OTHER TEAMS THAN 2006

After a terrible 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where the NBA stars of team USA, a nation of 314 million people lost to the tiny island of Puerto Rico 3.5 million people, Lithuania a nation of 3 million people and then Argentina in the knock-out round 41 million people, you would think not winning the Gold medal in 2004 and the hype of the coach K taking over in 2006, from Duke University, might make Jerry Colangelo eager to tell the new coach about the other squads that coach K might face in Japan.    Team USA scouting in 2006 was much the same, as what EUROJOHNBBALL found in the NBA when SIX NBA GM's had NO CLUE who  Greek PG Dimitris Diamantidis was as a 28 year old free agent.  The Spurs know Dimitris Diamantidis, Theo Papaloukas and Vassilis Spanoulis, because the Spurs DO THEIR HOMEWORK on the top players in Europe, better than any team in the NBA, but Team USA thought, that 12 players on a Greek squad that has 11 million people and at the time of the 2006 Semis game versus USA, had ZERO NBA players on the team, had little shot to defeat LeBron James, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Dywane Wade and Dwight Howard, along with other NBA players on the 2006 squad. Most media members from the USA that cover the NBA and almost every fan of the NBA in the USA have the same thinking of Basketball, IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE NBA, THEN YOU MUST NOT BE THAT GOOD.

Greece is the only nation from Europe that the NBA has not been able to grab the top players from and bring them to the USA, the entire Greek squad from the 2006 team could have made an NBA roster, either as a bench player, or in the cases of PG's Dimitris Diamantidis, Theo Papaloukas and Vassilis Spanoulis, the THREE guards that had 18 assists to only 3 Turnovers  and scored 42 points VS USA, they could have been BIG MINUTE PLAYERS in the NBA, but the 3 Greek PG's that won the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Euroleague titles decided that staying in Europe was better than coming to an NBA coach like Jeff Van Gundy, in the case of Vassilis Spanoulis and got stuck in the corner, waiting to shoot a 3 pointer, while Rafer Alston, Luther Head and Tracy McGrady pounded the ball at the top of the key.

The pounding the ball at the top of the key system is still in play in Houston, with James Harden jacking up deep shots, with little thought of spreading the ball around to so called ROLE PLAYERS like the Spurs do in winning a title or the Greek players are used to playing like in the European inside-out style of having all the players on the floor touch the ball.   Vassilis Spanoulis spent that one horrible year in Houston and Antonis Fotsis played one season with Memphis in the NBA as a young player, but the other 10 players on the 2006 Greek roster were a mystery to those that do not watch the top league in Europe, the Euroleague and team USA led by coach K were just lost in how to stop the Papaloukas, Spanoulis and Diamantidis PICK & ROLL.

Greece won the game 101-95 and in the post-game press conference, Coach K did not even know who NUMBER 4 & NUMBER 7 were, when asked about Papaloukas and Spanoulis, WHAT WAS TEAM USA DOING IN JAPAN ?? JUST SIGHTSEEING ??   How do you not know the guys you are up against in a SEMIFINAL matchup.    Team USA got revenge in the 2008 Olympics with a 92-69 win, as Coach K did HOMEWORK on the NON-NBA GREEK STARS and took the ball out of the hands of Papaloukas, Spanoulis and Diamantidis trapping the Pick & Roll HARD, but why would it take a 101-95 loss in 2006 to get the USA coaching staff to be ready like they SHOULD BE FOR EVERY TEAM and not judge players because they are not in the NBA.   EUROJOHNBBALL was trying to tell media members in Philadelphia about 12 Greeks that COULD PLAY, but most just thought EUROJOHNBBALL was just CRAZY.   What was crazy is not knowing who Theo Papaloukas or Vassilis Spanoulis was in a SEMIFINAL matchup and calling them NUMBER 4 and NUMBER 7.     Having Smaller players guard BIG SOFO, Sofokils Schortsantis in the paint, as he scored 14 points in 17 minutes was also due to watching ZERO VIDEO on that 2006 Greek squad, but the SIGHTSEEING of Japan had to be great.

In a Yahoo interview with Marc Spears Coach K said the Greek loss made the SCOUTING INCREASE, (Knowing the Best Players on the other Squad is JUST BASIC STUFF)  that 101-95 loss just goes to show, if you are not ready it will show and USA just showed up and thought it was a summer AAU game, taking Greece for granted because of the NON-NBA factor.

-  AFTER GOOD POST MOVES ALL WEEK MOTIEJUNAS GETS FEW TOUCHES IN THE POST

1. KINGS 77 ROCKETS 68 - EUROJOHNBBALL has been saying for years that Lithuanian 7 foot PF, Center Donatas Motiejunas needs a different NBA team to show his good POST MOVES, that he gets few chances to show in the Houston Rockets SMALL BALL 3 point shooting system, where he watches James Harden and in the past Jeremy Lin and Chandler Parsons JACK UP deep shots instead of looking inside first or hitting a cutting Motiejunas with a pass off pick and roll.     Last night in what is considered a MINOR game, of just NBA summer league, but it was the title game, Motiejunas must have thought he was in a Houston Rockets regular season game, as SUMMER LEAGUE guards and smaller players, were JACKING UP 3 point shots, going 5-24 from 3 point land and gave Motiejunas few chances to show his LAZAROS PAPADOPOULOS old-school type of POST MOVES.  Donatas shot 7-15 on FG's, 2-2 FT in the title game in 27 minutes of play, scoring 16 points, but was taken out in the 4th quarter, as Coach Chris Finch did what the Rockets do, GOING SMALL, with Tarik Black in the middle and Sacramento drove the lane for dunks and layups, getting back into the game and Finch only brought Motiejunas back late in the 4th.   Like EUROJOHNBBALL says, the Rockets are the wrong team for Donatas and he needs a trade.  The Rockets will not use his GOOD POST MOVES in the regular season, they will just stick him in the corner and use him like Kyle Korver type of 3 point shooter.  BOTTOM-LINE -  Trade the guy and let him use his POST MOVES.   Ray McCallum led the Kings with 29 points, on 9-15 FG, 3-7(3PT), 8-9 FT, 9 rebounds in the Kings title win.   Donatas Motiejunas will now join the Lithuanian national team, that will compete in the World Cup in Spain, Donatas will get POST TOUCHES with Lithuania, as teams in Europe play INSIDE-OUT.
