-      DARIO SARIC PLAYS 22 MINUTES & SCORES 9 POINTS IN ANADOLU EFES WIN

1. ANADOLU EFES 82 UNICS KAZAN 76 - Philadelphia 76ers first round pick Dario Saric did not play in his first Turkish TBL game with Anadolu Efes and talk of playing time by his father came up this week, as his father wants the young talented Croatian on the court, as the Turkish team could be the wrong fit in his opinion.  Dario Saric got 22 minutes to show what he has in his first ever Euroleague game today and he scored 9 points, on 4-7 FG, 0-1(3PT), 1-2 FT, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 turnover in the Anadolu Efes six point win over UNICS Kazan.   Anadolu Efes was led in scoring by American PG Dontaye Draper with 16 points, on 6-12 FG, 3-4(3PT), 1-1 FT, 4 assists and was followed by Serbian Center Nenad Krstic with 15 points, while American SG Matt Janning added 12 points and Greek SF Stratos Perperoglou had 10 points in the win.  Dario Saric scoring just 9 points in 22 minutes of play will not sit well with 76ers fans, who were told this guy is the next Toni Kukoc or Lamar Odom, with a Dejan Bodiroga flare to his game, but if his father and the fans are patient, playing in a deep Euroleague will make Dario Saric a better player when he comes to the NBA, remember, it is his first Euroleague game, be patient.

UNICS Kazan was led in scoring by American SG Keith Langford with 19 points and was followed by American SF James White with 13 points, 10 rebounds.

-     MACCABI HAIFA FAR FROM AN ELITE TEAM IN EUROPE STAY CLOSE VS WIZARDS

1. WIZARDS 101 MACCABI HAIFA 95 - EUROJOHNBBALL wrote a piece last season, that the top teams in Europe and the Euroleague (THE NBA version of the European Game), could hang with NBA teams, but some NBA media members thought this was just crazy.   Last month team USA dominated nations of 2 million, 3 million and 7 million people from Europe, to win the FIBA World Cup, just like a nation of 314 million people should do against European nations with small populations, but the Euroleague is unique, because, top club teams can grab talent from all of the European nations and South America, along with getting good American players that for what ever reason, did not get consistent minutes in the NBA.  The Andrew Goudelock 30 point game for Fenerbahce versus NBA champion San Antonio shows, some players still have talent and when going to a Euroleague club and they team up with quality European talent, they can play with any team, as it took the Spurs playing vet trio Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili big minutes in a 96-90 win versus Fenerbahce, as they avoided losing two straight games to Euroleague clubs, after ALBA Berlin upset them 94-93.

Last night in Washington, a team from Europe, that is not even involved the best league in Europe the Euroleague field of 24, Maccabi Haifa from the Israeli domestic league and infact they are not even in the Eurocup field of 36 or the Eurochallenge field of 36, but the club that plays just in Israel and is not even a top 40 club in Europe, lost by just SIX POINTS to the NBA Washington Wizards club.

Israeli SG Dagan Yavzuri led Maccabi Haifa with 23 points in 31 minutes, as he was on fire from 3 point land making 7-8 from long range and 8-13 FG and was followed by Israeli PF - Center Anton Shoutvin with 16 points, on 4-9 FG, 2-3(3PT), 6-7 FT, while American-Mexican PG Brody Angley added 11 points and 8 assists in the game. Those three players had great stat lines, but they are not exactly the biggest names in European basketball, but some how Maccabi Haifa only lost by six points, only a week after the NBA Spurs lost to ALBA Berlin, a good European club, but not exactly a top 10 squad in Europe.  As EUROJOHNBBALL wrote before, teams in Europe are not that far away from NBA clubs, this week of preseason play shows just that. The Wizards were led by Forward Otto Porter with 19 points, 8 rebounds and was followed by  French Center Kevin Seraphin with 18 points, 12 rebounds

-      PANATHINAIKOS DEFEAT OLYMPIACOS IN GREEK CUP ON LATE SECOND DUNK

1. Panathinaikos 77 Olympiacos 76 - In what is the biggest rivalry in all of European basketball, two European basketball powers played in an empty OAKA building, due to past incidents, that would make most USA sports events look like a Golf or Tennis type of crowd, compared to what Panathinaikos and Olympiacos players had to go through, DODGING and DARTING Flares and small metal objects in past Greek Cup games and Greek A1 championship games and due to the past events, the fans missed a great Greek Cup game.

Olympiacos was up 70-60 with five minutes left, but Dimitris Diamantidis came up clutch again, sticking a top of the key 3 pointer, to tie the game up at 75-75, then after Kostas Sloukas hit a FT to put Olympiacos up 76-75, with six seconds left, Diamantidis found new Center Esteban Batista open for a dunk to win the game for Panathinaikos, as Olympiacos could not get revenge for the Greek Finals from last year and though 32 year old Vassilis Spanoulis had the summer off from the Greek national team, it was again the 34 year old Diamantidis who came up big, to again bring up the question, who is the best European PG of the last decade in Europe.

Panathinaikos got a big game from Greek combo-guard Nikos Pappas with 19 points and was followed by Esteban Batista with 12 points, SF Vladimir Jankovic added 11 points, while Diamantidis had 8 points, 5 assists.  Olympiacos was led by SG Matt Lojeski with 16 points, PF Georgios Printezis had 13 points, while Vassilis Spanoulis added 12 points.    FULL GAME BOX SCORE

-                ALBA BERLIN UPSET NBA CHAMPION SPURS AT THE BUZZER IN GERMANY

1. ALBA Berlin 94 Spurs 93 - EUROJOHNBBALL wrote a piece last season, that the top five teams in the Euroleague had a shot of winning the weak Atlantic division in the Eastern conference of the NBA, but most who cover the NBA, brushed the thought off as ridiculous. The top five teams with enough depth in the Euroleague to think of winning the Atlantic division in the 2013-14 season, were Real Madrid, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce, FC Barcelona and CSKA Moscow, Greek power Panathinaikos could also compete at an NBA level, but today ALBA Berlin, who sort of reminds of the 2013-2014 Maccabi Tel Aviv Euroleague championship squad that got hot at the right time and upset Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow in one and done knockout games to win the title, upset the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs with a 94-93 win.  ALBA Berlin does not have the depth of the other Euroleague squads, or big name European player,  but today versus the Spurs, they showed some Euroleague teams can hang with NBA squads. This was the eleventh time a Euroleague team beat an NBA team in the Euroleague versus NBA preseason battle.

Former Xavier PF Jamel McLean was the hero for ALBA, hitting a 16 foot tear drop floater to win the game, as he led ALBA with 18 points, 10 rebounds, on 6-9 FG, 6-7 FT and was followed by former Clemson PG Cliff Hammonds with 15 points and former Belmont University PG Alex Renfroe with 15 points, while former Villanova SG Reggie Redding added 12 points and Croatian center Leon Radosevic 5 poits, 8 rebounds and Croatian PF Marko Banic 6 points in the win.

To be fair to the Spurs, this was their first preseason game, while ALBA has stronger legs, already playing two games in German BBL regular season, as the Spurs were led by PG Tony Parker with 28 points in 35 minutes, on 8-13 FG, 1-3(3PT), 11-13 FT and was followed by Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard with 14 points apiece, but this was the ALBA Berlin SUPER BOWL and the American players, that did not get drafted to the NBA, but make no mistake, the Spurs were trying to win this game, but as shown ten other times in the past decade, NBA and Euroleague teams are closer than NBA media and fans give them credit for, the top five Euroleague teams could compete at an NBA level every year, as this ALBA Berlin squad showed, that is not even close to a top five Euroleague squad this season.

-        NBA CHAMPION SPURS WIN BY SIX POINTS PLAYING VET TRIO BIG MINUTES

1. SPURS 96 FENERBAHCE 90 - Last season, EUROJOHNBBALL wrote a piece that the deepest squads in the Euroleague could hang with NBA squads and might even be the favorites to win what looked to be the weakest Atlantic division in NBA history and Turkish power Fenerbahce was one of the Euroleague teams named. Gone from the 2013-14 Fenerbahce squad are Bojan Bogdanovic to the NBA Nets, Linas Kleiza and Bo McCalebb, but facing the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs today, Fenerbahce still had big men Oguz Savas and Luka Zoric and Nemanja Bjelica and also added guards Andrew Goudelock and Ricky Hickman along with guard Bogdan Bogdanovic and PF Jan Vesely and though Nemanja Bjelica was only 1-7 on FG, 0-4(3PT), 4-4 FT, 6 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic was only 2-8 FG's 1-4(3PT), 5 points, former LA Lakers guard Anrew Goudelock was on fire with his new Turkish squad, going for 30 points, on 12-22 FG's, 4-8(3PT), 2-2 FT and got help from Turkish center Oguz Savas 15 points 7-8 FG and Croatian center Luka Zoric 11 points 7 rebounds, but the lack of scoring by the other perimeter players and the 10-11 FT's compared to 30-37 for the Spurs made it tough for the Euroleague squad to hand the NBA champs back to back defeats in Europe.

The Spurs were mad about losing to ALBA Berlin, but Fenerbahce hanging with the NBA champs after a loss in Berlin, shows what EUROJOHNBBALL wrote in the piece last year is not that crazy, top Euroleague teams are closer to NBA teams than most NBA fans and NBA media members think.  After losing to ALBA and playing big minutes in their first preseason game, the Spurs future Hall of Fame trio of, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili again played big minutes, as they did not want to lose two straight to NON-NBA TEAMS.

Tim Duncan was hot early in the game and led the way with 23 points in 35 minutes, on 9-13 FG, 5-5 FT, 7 rebounds and Tony Parker took over in the 3rd quarter of a tight one point game, scoring 22 points in 36 minutes, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, while Manu Ginobili followed with 12 points in 29 minutes.  The Spurs will take the hard fought win, but the older players probably did not want to play such big minutes so early in back to back games versus Euroleague teams.   Two great coaches in Gregg Popovich and Zeljko Obradovic faced each other in the game.  Zeljko Obradovic has won EIGHT Euroleague titles as a coach and some think, that might mean a future NBA job, but his in the face of players style and sometimes grabbing players style, would not FLY in the NBA.   If Obradovic can get good shooting from Bogdanovic and Bjelica in Euroleague play, to go along with his other players, he could be in the mix for a Ninth Euroleague title, if he can get to the Final Four.    If Bogdan Bogdanovic and Nemanja Bjelica could have hit their usual shots today versus the Spurs, it could have been another interesting ending, the way Goudelock was shooting.
