Most reporters that cover the NBA in the USA, think that the NBA stars on team USA should be the odds on favorite to win the Gold medal in Spain at the 2014 World Cup, but EUROJOHNBBALL is one of the few BBALL websites, that thinks this team USA, with no LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant along with Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony is not the same USA squad that beat Spain in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Gold medal games.  Spain was close in both of those Gold medal games and with Spain having the home court advantage, along with skilled Center Pau Gasol deciding to join his brother Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka in a stacked frontline, if Spain gets out of the tougher bracket on their side and they meet USA in the Gold medal game, it will be tough for this younger version of team USA to get inside baskets at the rim unless the Spanish guards are sloppy with passes and let USA get out on the break for easy highlight film dunks.

Spain has the guards that can keep their TO's low, as Ricky Rubio, Jose Calderon, Juan Carlos Navarro, Sergio Rodriguez, Sergio Llull and even SF Rudy Fernandez have ball skills off the dribble and every one of those Spanish players have the ability to run pick and roll and stick the jumper if team USA goes under the screen, with the exception of Ricky Rubio, who is not a great outside shooter, but Rubio will be key in the early stages of the Gold medal game, if the two teams meet, because Spain must control the game early with few TO's and that is why Rubio and the Spanish guards are KEY.   The two Gasol brothers and Serge Ibaka are a force in the paint, but if USA gets easy buckets and are not forced to stick jumpers, then it could be a long night for Spain.   Most NBA fans and even Jerry Colangelo and Coach K had little idea who Theo Papaloukas, Vassilis Spanoulis and Dimitris Diamantidis were in the 2006 Semifinal in Japan, but the three Greek PG's that chose to stay in Europe rather than come to the NBA had 18 assists and only 3 TO's versus LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, in the LAST LOSS FOR TEAM USA, a 101-95 win for Greece, as that is the only way to beat team USA and their NBA stars, the PG's on the other squads must be smart with the ball and can not be scared going into the game.    The Spanish guards have the Papaloukas, Spanoulis and Diamantidis ability to play with team USA and if they keep the TO's down, EUROJOHNBBALL thinks Spain will win the Gold medal.

USA has an easier bracket to get to the Gold medal game, as Lithuania could have been a test for them, but with the injury to PG Mantas Kalnietis, it will be tougher for Lithuania to stay in a 40 minute game with USA and though Lithuania will play well in POOL play, the lack of an elite European PG will make things tough for them in knockout stage versus teams like Croatia, Greece, Serbia, France or Brazil.

Spain is not a lock for the Gold medal game as much as USA is on their side of the bracket, because many teams on the Spain bracket have the ability to get hot in a knockout game situation and put the 2007 pressure back in the minds of the Spanish players, when David Blatt and Russia upset them on their home court to win the Eurobasket Gold.  USA has more talent than that Russian squad, but can James Harden and Derrick Rose hit the big jumpers against Spain that LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant have done in past Gold medal games.
