-                                       GREEK A1 FINALS GAME 5 -  JUNE 4th

- DIAMANTIDIS WINS 9th GREEK TITLE - SPANOULIS BAD SHOOTING CONTINUED GAME 5

1. PANATHINAIKOS 82 OLYMPIACOS 71 - After winning game three in front of the loudest crowd in the world, on the road 69-64, Olympiacos and the player EUROJOHNBBALL called the best in the last decade, that does not play in the NBA, Vassilis Spanoulis had a shot to win his 6th Greek title on his home court, but his 0-10 FG and just one point game in a 67-65 loss was not the normal Spanoulis that put Olympiacos on his back leading them to the 2012 and 2013 Euroleague titles and also helped Olympiacos grab their first Greek title in 2012 since the 1997 season.  Spanoulis is a three time Euroleague Final Four MVP and champion, but has played up and down all season in the Euroleague this year and his up and down play continued for the soon to be 32 year old Greek PG in the Greek playoffs, after hitting a vintage Spanoulis clutch DAGGAR 3 PT SHOT in a closeout Semis 3-0 sweep over Panionios, the down play returned versus Panathinaikos in the Greek A1 Finals, as in the deciding game 5 on the road, Spanoulis only scored 6 points in 27 minutes, on 1-7 FG, 0-4(3PT), 4-6 FT, 3 assists, as Olympiacos was down 53-32 at the half and without Spanoulis snapping out of his funk in these Finals, EUROJOHNBBALL said Olympiacos had NO SHOT of winning and so Panathinaikos defend their 2013 title and now 34 year old Greek PG Dimitris Diamantidis has won his 9th Greek title, while Vassilis Spanoulis has just Five Greek titles, in four of them, he was with Panathinaikos and a backcourt partner of Diamantidis, but since he joined Olympiacos, Diamantidis has won the 2011, 2013 and now 2014 Greek titles versus just one title for Spanoulis in 2012.

EUROJOHNBBALL always thought the shake and bake, off the dribble crossover game of Vassilis Spanoulis was the better fit for the NBA than Dimitris Diamantidis, who used his 6 foot 6 inch size to back guys down in Europe at the PG spot and could stick clutch jumpers, not to mention him winning the DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR in the Euroleague SIX TIMES, but unless Diamantidis played for the Spurs, most NBA coaches would not know how to use his strengths and hide the weak parts of his off the dribble isolation game.  Vassilis Spanoulis wanted to play in the NBA and would have been an elite NBA PG if Jeff Van Gundy knew how to use him, as for Diamantidis, he like many other great Greek players of the last decade just wanted to compete for European titles and get big minutes, when EUROJOHNBBALL asked former NBA GM's about Diamantidis when he was a 28 year old free-agent SIX NBA GM's HAD NO CLUE WHO HE WAS, Enough said, why would he leave Europe as THE MAN in front of the loudest crowd in the world and go to a league where many had no idea how tall or how old he was, not to mention he won the Euroleague Final Four MVP, two times, to go along with his three Euroleague titles.

EUROJOHNBBALL brings up the DEBATE of which Greek PG is the better player in Europe, because now with a 3-1 lead in head to head championship series in Greece, the advantage is now leaning to the 34 year old Diamantidis, and after the back to back Euroleague titles in 2012 and 2013, to go along with the 2012 Greek title, there was thought that Vassilis Spanoulis was the NEW GREEK PG KING, but Diamantidis winning back to back Greek titles over Spanoulis at the age of 33 and 34 could give the edge to the not as flashy Diamantidis, but he gets the job done.

Dimitris Diamantidis scored 11 points today in the game five win in 27 minutes of play, on 2-5 FG, 1-3 from 3 point land, 6-6 FT, dished 7 assists and had 3 steals, filling the stat sheet like usual and Panathinaikos was led in scoring by Lithuanian SF Jonas Maciulis with 15 points, on 5-6 FG, 1-2(3PT), 4-4 FT, while Greek stretch Forward Antonis Fotsis 10 points, 6 rebounds and American PF James Gist and Croatian combo-guard Roko-Leni Ukic added 9 points apiece in the Greek title win.

Panathinaikos made 26-31 from the FT line, compared to just 12-17 for Olympiacos, who were led in scoring by American SF Matt Lojeski with 17 points, on 7-12 FG, 2-5(3PT), 1-2 FT and was followed by Greek PF Georgios Printezis with 16 points, while American Center Bryant Dunston and American SG Mardy Collins added 11 points apiece for Olympiacos.     The year round grind of being the man for Olympiacos and the Greek national team for many seasons, might have taken a toll on Vassilis Spanoulis this season, but if Greece has a shot at a medal at the 2014 World Cup, it will have to be Spanoulis that leads the way, can he shake this tough season off, we will see at the end of this summer.

-           MOST VERSATILE OFFENSIVE SKILL LEVEL IN 2014 NBA DRAFT SARIC

-  DARIO SARIC 28 PTS SENDS CIBONA TO FINALS - SIXERS & TENTH PICK MAKE SENSE

1. CIBONA 90 ZADAR 86 - The top European prospect in the 2014 NBA draft is Croatian, 20 year old,  6 foot 10 inch, 230 pound forward Dario Saric and he showed his versatile offensive skills once again versus, veteran older players in game two of the Croatian Semifinals, leading the way for Cibona with 28 points in 37 minutes, on 11-21 FG, 2-6(3PT), 4-5 FT, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocked shots.  A report by Israeli basketball reporter David Pick of Eurobasket.com said that Dario Saric would only come to the NBA next season, if he was picked by the Lakers or Celtics, which is why EUROJOHNBBALL thinks that the Philadelphia 76ers and the 10th pick are a perfect fit for Dario Saric, as the Sixers want to be better in the 2014-15 season, but if they make the Eastern conference playoffs, they will lose their 2015 first round draft pick, so drafting Saric with the 10th pick and letting him stay in Europe for one season, would benefit both the Sixers and the 20 year old Saric, who could get some Euroleague play in Europe, before making the move to the NBA.  Many say that Dario Saric could be the next Dirk Nowitzki, but EUROJOHNBBALL thinks that Dario Saric has more of a combo of Toni Kukoc, Dejan Bodiroga and LeBron James type of offensive skill level, Saric is not the athlete that LeBron James is, but he is the triple threat on the offensive end, just like LeBron, with his ability at 6 foot 10 inches tall to post-up, hit the deep 3 point shot and shake defenders off the dribble from the top of the key, again not as athletic as LeBron James, but the skill level of the 20 year old Croatian at the offensive end, is the best in the 2014 NBA draft. Dario Saric does not get the hype of Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins, ( COULD IT BE THAT GINOBILI, TONY PARKER, DIRK THING OF NO USA COLLEGE BALL), but EUROJOHNBBALL predicts that Saric will be the best offensive player in this NBA draft in five years, when he will be just 25 years of age.   Saric can do it all on the offensive end and can cause defenses big matchup problems, compared to Andrew Wiggins who has trouble putting the ball on the floor to create his own shot and at 6 foot 8 inches tall, Jabari Parker, does not shoot the deep shot well enough to have LeBron James triple threat type of game, of the three players, Dario Saric is the only guy with the triple threat skill level and can grab a rebound on the defensive end and take it coast to coast ALA Charles Barkley in his 76ers days.    Even if Dario Saric does not want to play in Philadelphia, his draft rights could be a huge trading chip for Philly, as the 20 year old Croatian will only get better in Europe and teams will want to grab him from Philly.   Dario Saric is not Fran Vazquez, who never came to the NBA, the skill level of Dario Saric blows Fran Vazquez away and after a three year deal with a Euroleague power, the Croatian will want to play in the top league in the world the NBA.   If things work for both Philadelphia and Dario Saric, the Sixers take SF-SG Mario Hezonja with the 2015 NBA first round pick, to have the Croatian teammates playing with the number 3 pick in the 2014 NBA draft, along with Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel, not a bad young squad, with a triple threat offensive player in Dario Saric, to go up against an older LeBron James, as Philly can look to the future trying to win their first NBA title since 1983.     Cibona win the series 2-0 and move on to play Cedevita in game one of the Finals on June 3rd.

-       CEDEVITA GO TO FINALS - NBA PROSPECT JUSUF NURKIC 15 PTS IN 17 MIN LEADS

-   PANATHINAIKOS FORCE GAME 5 STEPHANE LASME & D. DIAMANTIDIS 30 PTS COMB.

1. PANATHINAIKOS 67 OLYMPIACOS 65 - After grabbing a tough road win in game four in front of a loud Panathinaikos crowd, Olympiacos had a shot to win game four on their home court today, but could not get it done, losing a two point game to the defending 2013 Greek league champions and now Olympiacos must try to win a deciding game five in front of that cazy crowd.  Olympiacos has NO SHOT of that happening, if soon to be 32 year old Greek PG Vassilis Spanoulis does not snap out of his funk and bring his vintage Spanoulis type of scoring in game five, as Panathinaikos held the 3 time Euroleague Final Four MVP to just one point in 30 minutes of play, on 0-10 FG, 0-4(3PT), 1-2 FT, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and his backcourt partner Mardy Collins was held to 5 points, on just 2-10 FG, 1-4(3PT).     Panathinaikos was led by Gabonese Center Stephane Lasme with 17 points, 9 rebounds, on 7-11 FG, 3-5 FT and was followed by Greek PG Dimitris Diamantidis with 13 points, 6 assists , while Greek Center Loukas Mavrokefalides added 10 points in the road win.  Olympiacos was led by American Center Bryant Dunston with 15 points, 7 rebounds, on 6-8 FG, 3-7 FT  and was followed by American SF Matt Lojeski with 14 points, 8 rebounds, while Greek PG Kostas Sloukas and Greek PF Georgios Printezis added 11 points apiece.  Olympiacos only made 4-22 from 3 point land and 19-30 on FT's in game four and for them to have a shot in game five, those numbers will have to improve and the best player not playing in the NBA in the past decade, Vassilis Spanoulis will have to get his MVP level of play back to give Olympiacos a shot in front of the loudest crowd in the world.
